5 Principles for traveling safely in Mexico

Travel

Traveling to Mexico for the first time can be an exciting adventure filled with vibrant culture, breathtaking scenery, and delicious cuisine. However, it is important to stay safe while exploring this beautiful country. Here are five principles to help you travel safely in Mexico:

1. Know Your Destination

Research your destination before you travel. Familiarize yourself with local customs, laws, and neighborhoods that may be safer than others. Be aware of any travel advisories issued by your government, as this information can help you avoid areas with higher crime rates or civil unrest.

2. Choose accommodations wisely

Choose accommodations in reputable neighborhoods that are known to be safe and tourist-friendly. Reading reviews from other travelers can be helpful. Consider staying in well-known hotels or resorts that offer security features such as 24-hour front desk and security guards.

3. Keep valuables safe and don't overpay

While exploring, keep your valuables safe and out of sight. Use a money belt or small backpack to carry important items such as passports, credit cards and cash. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics, and don't leave valuables unattended in public places. Don't carry a lot of cash in your wallet, just what you need for the day. It is better to pay with cash and Mexican Pesos than with Dollars, as everyone is using a very bad exchange rate and paying with a card you will pay from 10 to 15% extra charge. Some places, especially tour operators, don't accept credit cards. Here you can exchange money or withdraw pesos from your card at cash points. Banks do not change or give cash to foreigners.

4. Use reliable transportation

Choose reputable transportation. Organize your transfers to and from the airport, as taxis from the airport are very expensive and charge a premium. Uber is not available in Tulum or Playa del Carmen. Rent a car and don't accept rides from strangers. . If you're renting a car, make sure you're familiar with local driving laws and conditions. Police are particular as they can stop you for minimal speed over the limit and take everything you have in your wallet, so follow the previous advice and never carry a lot of cash. Keep your speed to 100km/h on the highway and don't give them a reason. Make sure you follow the signs and don't leave the car where you are not supposed to.

 5. Stay alert and trust your instincts

Always be aware of your surroundings. Trust your instincts if a situation doesn't feel right; it's better to be cautious than to take risks. When in doubt, ask locals for advice on safe areas and activities. Also, avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
